What To Consider When Remodeling
Grant: If you’re thinking about remodeling, here are some things to think about! When a homeowner chooses to remodel, I’ve found they want more than just some extra space. They want an addition or amenity that enhances both the beauty and the value of their home. Here are five questions you can ask the contractors who are bidding on your job. Their answers should give you an excellent idea of how they are going to handle you remodeling project and what you can expect your home to look like when they’re finished.
1) How will they use your existing home as an inspiration?
You want your new addition or amenity to look like it’s part of your home – not just something that is tacked on. Be sure to question your contractor how he or she plans to tie the old and the new together.
2) How will they match existing features of your home?
Mismatched windows are a sure give-away, but what about other architectural elements? For example, a bay window in the new addition that matches and balances with an existing bay window may tie the old and new together beautifully.
3) Has your contractor considered the “flow” of your home?
The layout of your home still needs to make sense. Has your contractor taken the room-to-room traffic pattern into consideration? Be sure that you can get to each room – new or old — in a way that makes your home more livable and convenient.
4) What about energy usage?
Remodeling may give you a great opportunity to incorporate new energy-saving features – and even earn rebates. Adding solar panels or a solar hot water heater, upgrading windows or insulation or including water-saving toilets and faucets can deliver a lifetime of savings and may even qualify for an energy-efficiency tax credit.
5) Does the “old” work with the new?
We’re not talking about how it matches – we’re talking about does it work? Is your heating and cooling system able to take care of the expanded space? Could you save by updating to a more efficient mechanical unit? Your contractor should be your expert and give you all the facts and options you need to make sure your remodel is absolutely perfect so you can just enjoy your home.
